Anger Is a Signal, Not the Problem: Working with Anger in Therapy

Emma Bourroux, AMFT · October 9, 2026 · 5 min read

People rarely come to therapy wanting to work on anger. They come because of what anger cost them: an argument that went too far, a child who flinched, a partner who stopped talking, a job that got harder to keep. The anger itself is usually the part they understand least.

What anger is usually standing in front of

Anger is a fast, protective emotion. It moves in before slower feelings can, which is why it often stands in front of hurt, fear, shame, or plain exhaustion. Someone who snaps over the dishes may actually be carrying feeling unappreciated. Someone who rages in traffic may be running on zero reserves. This does not excuse harmful behavior, and it does explain it, which matters because you cannot change what you refuse to understand.

When anger becomes a problem

Anger becomes a problem when it is the only tool available, when it damages relationships or work, or when it turns inward and shows up as constant self-criticism. If people you love are walking on eggshells, or you are, that is a clear sign more support would help.

What working on anger looks like

  • Learning to catch the earliest physical signs, tight jaw, hot chest, clenched hands, while there is still room to choose.
  • Naming the softer feeling underneath and practicing saying it out loud.
  • Building a pause: stepping away, breathing low, and returning when the wave passes.
  • Looking at the older stories that make certain moments feel like threats.
  • Repairing with the people your anger has touched, which rebuilds trust on both sides.
