Anxious in Paradise: When Living in a Beach Town Does Not Quiet Your Mind

Emma Bourroux, AMFT · September 8, 2026 · 5 min read

Encinitas is genuinely beautiful, and that can make anxiety feel like a personal failure. Clients say some version of it almost weekly: the sunsets are right there, my life looks good on paper, so why does my chest feel tight from the moment I wake up?

Anxiety is not a verdict on your gratitude. It is a nervous system that has learned to scan for threat and has not been shown it can stop.

Why the setting does not settle it

  • Beauty is soothing input; anxiety is an internal alarm system, and the two operate on different channels.
  • Coastal life here often comes with real pressure: cost of living, long commutes, and the expectation to look effortlessly well.
  • A calm environment can make you hide the anxiety better rather than feel it less.

Skills that actually lower the alarm

From DBT, the practices that tend to help most are small and physical:

  • Cold water on the face or wrists to interrupt a spike quickly.
  • Paced breathing with a longer exhale than inhale, for two minutes.
  • Naming the emotion precisely: anxious about Monday, not just 'bad'.
  • Opposite action: doing the small thing anxiety says to avoid, at a size you can finish.
  • Protecting sleep, food, and movement first; skills work poorly on an empty tank.
