Body Image and Self-Worth: When the Mirror Gets Loud
Emma Bourroux, AMFT · October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Many people who look composed on the outside carry a running commentary about their body: the outfit that needs changing, the photo that needs deleting, the meal that needs earning. If that commentary has been getting louder, you are not vain or broken. You are responding to a culture that teaches the same lesson to nearly everyone.
How body image and self-worth get tangled
Body image and self-worth become tangled early. Compliments and criticism alike teach us that how we look is a measure of our value. Social media sharpens the lesson with constant comparison. Over time, a hard body-image day can flatten everything: confidence at work, patience at home, willingness to be seen.
Why the criticism feels so loud
The harsh voice in the mirror is rarely yours. It is an echo of comments, comparisons, and standards you did not choose. In therapy, one of the first steps is telling the difference between the echo and your own voice. The echo does not have to be believed just because it is loud.
What helps
- Noticing the commentary without obeying it: you can hear the thought and still wear the swimsuit, eat the meal, or join the photo.
- Practicing self-compassion out loud, in the same tone you would use with a friend.
- Curating your feed. If an account reliably makes you feel worse, unfollowing is self-care, not weakness.
- Building worth on what you do and who you are to people, not on a number or a reflection.
- Bringing the deeper material to therapy: old messages about your body often trace back to childhood, family, or relationships.
