Should I See a Therapist? Signs It May Be Time, from an Encinitas Therapist
Emma Bourroux, AMFT · September 7, 2026 · 5 min read

One of the questions I hear most often from people around Encinitas and North County San Diego is some version of: is what I am going through big enough for therapy? Usually the person asking has been carrying something for a long time: a low hum of anxiety, a relationship that keeps circling the same argument, a loss they never quite put down.
You do not need a crisis to justify support. Therapy is just as useful for tending to something early as it is for finding your footing after everything has already fallen apart.
Signs it may be time to reach out
A few patterns that often bring people to my office in Encinitas:
- You feel anxious or on edge most days, and rest does not seem to reset it.
- Sleep, appetite, or focus have shifted and stayed shifted for several weeks.
- You are having the same painful conversation with your partner again and again.
- A loss, breakup, move, diagnosis, or job change still shapes most of your days.
- You are functioning well on the outside and feeling hollow on the inside.
- Coping that used to work: working more, scrolling, drinking, staying busy, is costing you more than it gives.
What a first session looks like
A first session is mostly a conversation. I want to understand what brought you in, what has already helped, what you are hoping feels different in six months, and what you need from me to feel safe enough to be honest.
You set the pace. Nothing has to be told before you are ready to tell it. We will also talk plainly about logistics: scheduling, session frequency, and how we will know together whether the work is helping.
Therapy in Encinitas and North County San Diego
I work with individuals, couples, and families across Encinitas and the greater San Diego area, drawing on DBT, Narrative Therapy, trauma-informed care, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy. If reading this stirred something familiar, that is reason enough to reach out.
