Helping Children Adjust to Divorce: What Helps, and What Hurts
Emma Bourroux, AMFT · October 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Divorce reshapes a child's whole world: two homes, new schedules, and parents who are carrying their own grief while trying to stay steady. If you are navigating this, the fact that you are reading about how to do it well says a lot about you.
What children usually worry about
Children are often less worried about the divorce itself than about what it means for them: Where will I live? Will I still see both of you? Did I cause this? Young children especially can blame themselves, even when no one has said anything to suggest it. Naming things clearly, in age-appropriate words, takes the weight of guessing off their shoulders.
What helps children adjust
- Tell them together, when possible, with one simple message: this is not your fault, and both parents will keep loving and caring for you.
- Keep routines predictable, even across two homes. Bedtime, homework, and screen rules that match make the moves feel less like upheaval.
- Never ask a child to carry adult information. Finances, affairs, and court details belong with adults.
- Let them love both of you without guilt. A child should never have to hide fondness for one parent from the other.
- Expect some regression, big feelings, and testing. These are normal responses to big change, not signs of damage.
What tends to hurt
What research and clinical experience agree on is this: children adjust best when conflict between parents is low and both parents stay warm, involved, and cooperative. Ongoing arguing, putting a child in the middle, or speaking poorly about the other parent in front of them does far more harm than the divorce itself.
