How Your Early Experiences Shape the Way You Love

Emma Bourroux, AMFT · October 14, 2026 · 6 min read

Most of us learned how relationships work long before we were in one. From the adults who raised us, we absorbed how feelings get handled, whether needs get voiced or hidden, and what happens after a fight. Nobody taught it on purpose. It soaked in.

Where the script comes from

If you grew up where big feelings were met with calm attention, you likely find it natural to reach for your partner when you are hurting. If feelings were met with criticism, dismissal, or silence, you may have learned to swallow needs, explode suddenly, or handle everything alone. Neither is a character flaw. Both are adaptations, and both can be revised.

How the old script shows up in adult relationships

  • Going quiet when conflict starts, because somewhere along the way being upset alone felt safer.
  • Needing frequent reassurance, then feeling embarrassed about needing it.
  • Reading the worst into a neutral text, because unpredictability once meant danger.
  • Apologizing quickly, even when you did nothing wrong, to keep the peace at any cost.
  • Struggling to name what you want, because wanting things once felt risky.

Changing a pattern you did not choose

In Narrative Therapy, we start by separating you from the pattern: the silence, the suspicion, the quick surrender. You did not write that script, but you are allowed to edit it now. In session, we trace where a reaction came from, practice the new move while it is still hard, and build relationships, including the one with yourself, on choice rather than habit.
