Gottman Repair Attempts: How to Pause and Restart a Difficult Conversation

Emma Bourroux, AMFT · September 20, 2026 · 4 min read

Gottman uses repair attempt to describe a word or action intended to interrupt escalating negativity during an interaction. A partner might acknowledge a sharp tone, clarify what they meant, or ask for a pause. Whether the attempt helps depends on the context and how it is received.

A repair is not a guarantee that a disagreement will end. It is an effort to make continued conversation more manageable. The underlying concern may still need attention after the immediate tension changes.

Take responsibility for the specific moment

If you raised your voice, naming that behavior can be clearer than a broad apology followed by another accusation. You can acknowledge your part while still asking to discuss the issue. These original examples are educational suggestions, not a Gottman script.

  • I spoke sharply. I want to try saying that again more clearly.
  • I understand that my comment hurt you. I want to hear what landed badly.
  • I am getting defensive. Can we slow down and take one point at a time?
  • I agree with that part, even though I see the next part differently.

A pause needs a plan for returning

Sometimes a person is too overwhelmed to listen or speak thoughtfully. Asking for a break can be appropriate. Where it is safe to do so, explain that you intend to return and agree on a realistic time. Leaving without explanation may be experienced differently from a mutually understood pause.

During the break, choose something that helps you settle rather than preparing the next accusation. When you return, ask whether both of you are ready. There is no single pause length that suits every situation, and either person can ask for professional help if returning repeatedly becomes difficult.

Receiving a repair does not mean giving up your concern

You might recognize the effort while naming what is still unresolved: 'I appreciate that you want to restart. I still need us to discuss the decision we made.' Accepting a change in tone does not require agreeing with the other person's position.

Humor, touch, or a nickname can feel reassuring in one relationship and dismissive in another. Do not assume those gestures are welcome during conflict. Ask each other what tends to help, and respect a request not to be touched.

Look beyond repeated apologies

An apology followed by the same harmful behavior may not restore trust. Repair can require concrete follow-through, accountability, and a change in how decisions are made. A communication exercise alone cannot establish those changes.

If attempts regularly go unnoticed or are rejected, the surrounding pattern deserves attention. The Gottman Method overview explains how conflict work sits alongside friendship and shared meaning. Emma's couples therapy service provides practice-specific information.

If there is intimidation, coercion, violence, or fear of a partner, prioritize your safety and seek individual professional guidance. Joint communication exercises may be inappropriate. You do not have to disclose private information or continue a conversation that feels unsafe.
